Project Overview

The Rugeley John Taylor School represents a landmark educational development for Staffordshire. Located on the historic site of the former Rugeley Power Station, this is the county's first all-through school, designed to provide seamless education for children aged 3 to 18 and to address the local demand for school places. It will open gradually, with Secondary Years starting in September 2025. To assist this process, Nuneaton Signs supplied signage in three phases, from August to December 2025. The project's phased approach required careful planning to understand the precise timing of tasks, prioritisation of drawings, and collaboration with the BAM Design Manager to ensure all signs for each phase were identified. BAM Construction tendered the work in June 2025. With a quick turnaround, Nuneaton Signs presented them with three options for the main internal signage. The options were two proprietary systems and one more cost-effective system. After reviewing samples, the school chose the Nuneaton Signs product. Its straightforward manufacturing process and short lead time supported the school's opening in September 25. Significant, complex design development was necessary for the school’s external name sign. The chosen location was within the web of a large structural beam, which posed a risk that the beam’s flanges could block the lettering. This required a creative engineering approach to guarantee optimal visibility. By reacting quickly and thinking creatively, Nuneaton Signs helped transform the school into a vibrant, modern educational environment. This project is our fourth successful partnership with BAM Construction, reaffirming that Nuneaton Signs is the preferred partner for the UK’s top contractors when it comes to reliability, value engineering, and a proactive approach.

Collaborating closely with the BAM Design Manager, our account manager, Tim, made sure every detail was carefully managed.

Strategic Phasing:
We prioritised technical
drawings and production schedules to ensure Phase 1 was ready for the
school’s historic first day in September.

Bespoke Manufacturing:
The internal signage, including sleek flat-cut letters, acrylics, and high-impact mega graphics was produced in our factory. External signage featured a variety of panels fixed to a number of different substrates.

Design Development:
We undertook significant design work on the external beam signage, ensuring the branding remained prominent and unobstructed by the building’s structural elements.

As the school developed its operational needs, we were later commissioned to return and install additional signage to accommodate the Baskerville School, six months after the original completion.

Despite significant delays during the main construction programme, which reduced the installation window as the September opening deadline approached, we worked closely with BAM to manage a phased handover. This required multiple return visits to ensure the works aligned with the revised programme. All signage was completed within the adjusted timeline.

Social Value

Although some specialised components were sourced externally, most of the internal signage was produced in-house by Nuneaton Signs. This approach enabled improved quality control and fostered the proactive, responsive attitude that characterised our role in the subcontract development.

Why Nuneaton Signs?

Nuneaton Signs secured the contract through a combination of technical agility and value engineering. By leveraging our in-house manufacturing capabilities, we created a solution that was not only more cost-effective but also offered a shorter lead time. After presenting physical samples to the client, the Nuneaton Signs custom system was selected as the superior choice for the school’s interior.
